After having just returned from an epic African adventure across 4 countries, I reflect on the incredible diversity of wildlife and habitats that we encountered. I lead a small and intimate photo tour of three wonderful travellers to Botswana, South Africa, Uganda and Tanzania. Our first location was the pristine Okavango delta in northern Botswana. This area is amazing for its quiet beauty and stunning diversity of wildlife. Predator central, we encountered all five large mammalian carnivores; lion, leopard, cheetah, African wild dogs and spotted hyena. Included in our sightings were rare treats finding leopard and lion cubs and a wild dog den with ten pups! Safaris here were early morning and late afternoon into the evening and we were richly rewarded with superb activity and intriguing behaviours.
After this region, we explored South Africa’s Timbavati; a fantastic area, bordering the massive Kruger National Park in the north-east of the country. Highlights here were many including; watching 29 elephants pass by our lodge, observing five hyena cubs at a den site and spending time with a pair of endangered white rhinos. It was then on to East Africa, first to trek mountain gorillas in Uganda’s pristine Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. We tracked two different troops with 19 and 11 individuals. Time spent among these great apes was unforgettable and observing the silverbacks, multiple females and black-backs and even infants was fascinating and entirely inspiring. The terrain here is very dense and undulating which made eventually finding the gorillas ever more rewarding.
The final leg of our trip saw us enter into the vast plains of the Serengeti, in northern Tanzania. Here our comfortable camp sat near to the Mara River, which was often bustling with hippos and spying Nile crocodiles. We encountered many lion prides, elephant herds, leopard, zebra, wildebeest, giraffe, black rhino, buffalo and much more! In all, our journey was filled with incredible wildlife, stunning vistas, stellar accommodations, sumptuous food and smiles and laughs every day and night! I will be guiding several trips back to Africa in the coming years, including Botswana, Zambia, Kenya and more.
